As the clean hydrogen sector gears up to become a multi-billion-dollar industry in the next decade, it faces a unique challenge: aligning supply with demand. This hurdle is precisely what the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) aims to tackle by allocating a substantial portion of the $7 billion budget to create seven regional hydrogen clusters. The objective? Encourage collaboration among producers, infrastructure owners, and offtakers to foster a robust hydrogen value chain. The ultimate goal: securing financing, constructing pivotal projects, and decarbonizing some of the nation’s most pollution-heavy sectors.

Envisioned in the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, this program has attracted immense interest. A total of 79 hub proposals initially applied following the announcement of the Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs) budget in September 2022. From this pool, the DOE then narrowed it down to 33, while all made their fair case for full application, finally this 13th of October 2023, President Biden and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm announced seven regional clean hydrogen hubs that were selected to receive $7 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding to accelerate the domestic market for low-cost, clean hydrogen.

Here are the hubs selected for negotiation:

  • Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub (Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2); Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey) — Amount: up to $750 million
  • Appalachian Hydrogen Hub (Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2); West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania) — Amount: up to $925 million
  • California Hydrogen Hub (Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES); California) — Amount: up to $1.2 billion
  • Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub (HyVelocity Hydrogen Hub; Texas) — Amount: up to $1.2 billion
  • Heartland Hydrogen Hub (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota) — Amount: up to $925 million
  • Midwest Hydrogen Hub (Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2); Illinois, Indiana, Michigan) — Amount: up to $1 billion
  • Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub (PNW H2; Washington, Oregon, Montana) — Amount: up to $1 billion

Join us in this webinar to gain access to invaluable insights, and hear from the hub representatives themselves:

  • In-Depth funding analysis: explore the financial landscape of hydrogen hubs, understanding how they will they spend the DOE’s substantial investment and what role state-level and private companies play in this equation
  • Technological transparency: delve into the significance of transparency in the planning of hydrogen hubs. Learn how community engagement and emissions standards can make or break their success
  • Fueling the future: understand the critical importance of emissions standards and their impact on hub viability. Discover how adherence to these standards can influence billions in subsidies
  • Infrastructure challenges: examine the challenges of transporting and storing clean hydrogen. Get insights into the implications of inadequate infrastructure on industry growth and the innovative solutions that are on the horizon
