Italy is committed to be being at the forefront of electric market innovation, driving the energy transition through key initiatives like energy storage. With 2025 on the horizon, Italy is poised for a surge in storage asset investments. The game-changer? The new MACSE support mechanism, which offers long-term, indexed contracts for up to 100% of asset capacity.
MACSE—the Electricity Storage Capacity Procurement Mechanism (in Italian, Meccanismo di Approvvigionamento di Capacità di Stoccaggio Elettrico)—is a large-scale storage procurement system that will open competitive auctions for up to 71 GWh of storage (between 12 to 15 GW by 2030). The renewables sector anticipates the first auction as early as 2025, offering developers the chance to secure contracts ranging from 12 to 14 years for lithium-ion batteries and up to 30 years for pumped hydro storage (PHES). This initiative, managed by Terna, aims to stimulate new storage capacity and propel Italy’s energy system towards a more sustainable future.
However, integrating this tender into Italy’s market system raises critical questions for developers and investors alike.
Join our exclusive webinar to explore the implications of the MACSE tender for the future of BESS and PHED technologies, and dive into essential topics such as:
- Explore the latest Italian energy system outlook, detailed in the “Documento di Descrizione degli Scenario 2024” (DDS2024), and understand its long-term vision for the market up to 2040 and its impact on MACSE auctions
- Discover key insights for investors aiming to leverage opportunities in Italy’s rapidly evolving storage market
- Develop effective bidding strategies for the MACSE auction and learn how to structure successful projects
- Gain an understanding of complementary mechanisms like Italy’s capacity market for supply security and the RES CfD “DM FER X” program, designed to drive investment in intermittent renewables such as solar and wind
