The utility-scale energy storage market in Italy is growing at an unprecedented speed and it is quickly becoming the most dynamic market in Europe. A recent study by Italian Transmission Operator (TSO) TERNA estimated that the grid needs about 71 GWh of new utility-scale storage capacity by 2030 for the country to decarbonize its energy system in line with EU targets. This means a massive deployment of around 19 GW of large-scale energy storage capacity by 2030.

However, the energy storage market in Italy faces a series of hurdles. Firstly, the revenue model for merchant energy storage projects is not clear. And even though specific capacity auctions for energy storage are coming out in the next months, it is still not clear which technologies will be allowed or the fixed remuneration that will be offered, especially in the 4-to-8-hour slot. Furthermore, the aree idonee decree introduces more regulatory uncertainties, making it harder for developers to invest in the industry.

Join us in this webinar to hear industry experts provide an in-depth analysis of the opportunities and challenges of the utility scale energy storage market in Italy.

  • Understand how to navigate the regulatory and permitting obstacles to large-scale energy storage in Italy so you can partake in this booming market
  • Discover key details about the upcoming 24-7 energy storage auctions — learn the schedule and procedures to ensure your projects are auction-ready
  • Evaluate potential revenue models for ancillary services in large-scale energy storage across the seven regions, to pinpoint the most promising opportunities tailored to local demand
  • Learn from practical case studies on Italy’s recent energy storage projects — delve into their operational strategies and financial performance post-auction
