Webinar: Energy storage in Italy – opportunities in the utility scale market
December 1st at 11h CET (Check your local time)
The utility-scale energy storage market in Italy is growing at an unprecedented speed and it is quickly becoming the most dynamic market in Europe. A recent study by Italian Transmission Operator (TSO) TERNA estimated that the grid needs about 71 GWh of new utility-scale storage capacity by 2030 for the country to decarbonize its energy system in line with EU targets. This means a massive deployment of around 19 GW of large-scale energy storage capacity by 2030.
However, the energy storage market in Italy faces a series of hurdles. Firstly, the revenue model for merchant energy storage projects is not clear. And even though specific capacity auctions for energy storage are coming out in the next months, it is still not clear which technologies will be allowed or the fixed remuneration that will be offered, especially in the 4-to-8-hour slot. Furthermore, the aree idonee decree introduces more regulatory uncertainties, making it harder for developers to invest in the industry.
