(Moderator)Spain has it all to become one of the largest energy storage markets in Europe.
Already, about half of the power generation fleet in Spain is made up of wind and solar PV, both intermittent renewables that need energy storage, or fossil fuels, to keep energy flowing steadily to businesses and households.
The need for energy storage will become even more pressing as Spain phases out fossil fuels in the run up to its 2030 target (75% renewable generation). By 2050, Spain aspires to 100% renewable power generation, making energy storage systems unavoidable, if they want to keep the lights on and the economy running. Knowing this, the government has aimed for 20 GW of energy storage by 2030 and 30 GW by 2050.
However strong the case for energy storage, the current reality is challenging. Evolving rules around permitting make the process of building a storage plant in Spain more uncertain than it could be. More seriously, a lack of regulation and market signals often compromise the long-term business case of storage assets. Finally, high energy prices have had varying effects on energy storage, not all of them good. Whilst higher electricity prices make certain storage services more attractive and energy storage more necessary than ever, they also make for more expensive equipment, since the manufacturing of batteries and energy storage equipment is also energy intensive.
