The Southern Africa region faces huge challenges and immense opportunities as it deploys gigawatts of new power plants to power economic prosperity whilst partially weaning itself off coal. Given the bountiful levels of solar irradiation and the many hours of sunshine enjoyed in the region, solar energy is well placed to capture the lion’s share of new power plant deployments. And as the gigawatts of variable renewables mount, so does the need for storage technologies to manage the peaks and troughs of PV and Wind.
South Africa, the biggest country in the region, in many ways exemplifies the situation across Africa. The country is already suffering from power shortages which, if nothing changes, will become more acute as ageing power plants are decommissioned. In the next 10 years, as many as 24 GW of coal plants will be forcibly retired as they reach end of life. Namibia and Botswana face a similar predicament, not least because they have traditionally relied on electricity exports from South Africa.
But these countries are not sitting still and waiting for the energy conundrum to solve itself. South Africa has already procured 18 GW of renewable energy and is set to procure an additional 21 GW through its competitive procurement programme. Namibia and Botswana also have ambitious plans to deploy 5 GW of solar power to become self-sufficient and, in time, export power through the Southern African Power Pool, which interconnects 17 countries. These initiatives, often have the support in international development banks, that are ramping up their efforts to enable Africa to expand its energy generation capabilities and transition away from coal.
Join this workshop to gain an insider’s look into the opportunities and challenges that Southern Africa offers for renewables and energy storage.
